Golfinho Bar e Restaurante

Located on the main street in the center of town, we offer a spacious and pleasant atmosphere with great gastronomic excellence

On Avenida Baía dos Golfinhos, half a block off the busiest stretch, there is a tiled room on wooden beams hung with woven-thread lanterns. At night they come on in red, orange and turquoise, and that light is the first clue that this is not a corridor you pass through: it is a meeting point with a seafood kitchen, live music and service until one in the morning.

How you eat here

The house describes itself as a kitchen of petiscos and regional dishes with draught beer and cocktails, in a relaxed meeting point with live music. That explains the shape of the place: you can come in for a drink and something to pick at, or sit down to a full plate, and both happen in the same room.

The backbone of the menu is pasta, and it is written out in detail. The list opens with espaguete ao fruto do mar: octopus, shrimp and diced fish fillet, sautéed in garlic and olive oil and folded through the spaghetti with a white sauce. Then comes espaguete ao molho de camarão, grano duro pasta with shrimp sautéed in pomodoro, and the two house basics: pomodoro and bolognese.

Three further dishes explain the bill for a table that has come to eat properly. Camarão Terra à Vista: shrimp sautéed with garlic, onion and bell pepper over spaghetti, béchamel sauce, capers and a gratin of mixed cheeses, served with french fries. Filé mignon à parmegiana and filé de frango à parmegiana, both breaded, with pomodoro sauce and mozzarella gratinated over spaghetti. And espaguete carbonara, made here with minced beef flambéed in white wine and an egg-based béchamel.

Seafood beyond the pasta list

The house's own photographs show a seafood rice served in a paella pan, with whole prawns, squid rings, octopus tentacles, strips of red and green pepper and coriander over the top. That is the sharing dish, the one you order for two and divide, and it sums up what this kitchen does best.

In the same register are the sauté of octopus, shrimp and fish served on a cast-iron plate, which arrives hot and keeps cooking at the table, and the oysters, served fresh with lime. From the land side, carne de sol in strips with fried manioc and julienned carrot is the house's regional plate.

Salads and sides

There are two named salads. The tropical brings mixed leaves, rocket, carrot, onion, tomato, mango and cut pineapple. The Ceasar comes with iceberg lettuce, strips of chicken breast, house croutons and shavings of parmesan, dressed on a mustard base. Sides are ordered separately: rice, vinaigrette, salad, grilled pineapple, grated cheese and french fries.

What to drink

There is a bar on site and the drinks list is declared in full: beer, wine, cocktails, spirits and coffee. There are also happy hour drinks and plates, which in a house that opens at four in the afternoon on weekdays has an obvious window: the one between the end of the beach and the start of dinner.

And there is late-night food, the other end of the day. From Monday to Saturday the kitchen runs until one in the morning: if you are out late, or dinner somewhere else ran long, there is still a hot plate here.

The room

The room is roofed in tile over wooden beams, with pale green walls dressed in coloured birdhouses, a wrought-iron panel and a lit drinks cabinet. Woven spherical lanterns and pierced-metal lamps hang from the beams and, after dark, colour the whole ceiling.

The tables are solid wood with bench seating, and the front of the room opens onto the avenue: from inside you watch the street, and from the street you see the room. That openness is deliberate, because the house presents itself as a meeting point rather than a closed dining room.

It is described as casual, quiet and trendy, with a family atmosphere, and it takes both groups and travellers. There is free Wi-Fi, a restroom and outdoor tables as well as the main room. Dogs are allowed, including in the outdoor area.

When to go

The hours shift by day and it is worth knowing before you walk over. Monday to Friday it opens at 4pm and closes at 1am. Saturday it opens at 11.30am and also closes at 1am. Sunday it opens at 11.30am and closes at midnight.

In other words: lunch exists at the weekend, not midweek. If what you want is to eat at noon after the beach, Saturday and Sunday are the days. If what you want is dinner with music, any night works, and the long window means you can turn up at eleven and still sit down.

Where it is and how to get there

It sits at Avenida Baía dos Golfinhos 625, the main street of Praia da Pipa. You can walk there from anywhere in the centre without turning off, and the room is at pavement level: no side entrance, no stairs.

Parking in the area is hard to find, so walking is the comfortable option. From Praia da Pipa you come up the same avenue. If you are arriving from Natal, from the airport or from another beach along the coast, look at the transfer options to cover the stretch into the village and move on foot from there.

With children

This is the part that never shows in photographs and that decides a family dinner. The house is listed as good for children, with high chairs and a changing table. All three together are not common on this avenue.

In practice it means there is nothing to arrange: the child has somewhere to sit, there is somewhere to change them, and the menu carries small plates and simple pasta that settle the matter without negotiation. At the weekend, lunch also starts at 11.30am, which is when a family actually eats.

Who is it for?

For the table that wants seafood without ceremony: a seafood rice in the middle, a hot iron plate and a cold beer, with the street coming in through the front.

For the family that needs a high chair and a changing table, and wants to have Sunday lunch without rearranging the plan at three in the afternoon.

And for anyone out late who wants to eat properly at midnight: the kitchen works until one, Monday to Saturday.
