What to eat

The menu is short and entirely Italian in key: starters with bruschetta, twelve pastas, seven raviolis and four desserts. There is no pizza.

Starters and bruschetta

It opens with the Catalana di gamberi: grilled prawns with fresh tomato, basil pesto and sweet-and-sour onion, both made in house, with house bread. Beside it sit the Cappelletti fritti, meat-filled pasta, fried, with parmesan cream and balsamic.

There are four bruschetta, and they mark the kitchen's range: the Tricolore, with fresh tomato, garlic and pesto; the Gorgonzola, with gorgonzola cream, cashew and honey; the Pesto, which adds extra virgin olive oil, garlic, cashew and ricotta cream; and the Trufada. In the house photos they arrive lined up on a black board, with the tomato and pesto on top.

Pastas

Twelve sauces, and they are worth reading end to end because none of them repeats. The tomato ones: Pomodoro, with seasoned fresh tomato, and Amatriciana, which adds bacon. The cheese ones: Crema di Gorgonzola, Crema di Parmigiano — with butter, parmesan and black pepper — and Crema Truffata, with parmesan cream and truffle oil. The mushroom ones: Funghi e Carne and Porcini, which comes as fettuccine with porcini sautéed in garlic, olive oil and parsley. And the sea ones: Gamberi, with fresh tomato and prawns, and Frutti di Mare, with prawn cream, mussel and prawn fillet.

Two stand apart. The Gnocchi di Sorrento, potato and flour dumplings with tomato sauce, mozzarella and drops of pesto, which break the series: neither long pasta nor filled pasta. And the Foglia Oro, with gorgonzola, prawn, sun-dried tomato, cashew and 24-carat gold leaf: the plate the house signs the menu with.

Raviolis

Seven, and this is the trattoria's own block. The truffled white sauce one is filled with squash, parmesan and walnut. The di Broccolli comes in Tuscan sausage sauce; the di Stracciatti, mushrooms and beef; the di Provolone, aceto and gorgonzola; the di Gamberi, fresh tomato. There are also the Cappelletti al ragù and the Ravioli Mamma Mia, the house one: filled with tuna or sea bass, cheese, lemon and Mediterranean herbs, in an aromatic white sauce with sun-dried tomato and drops of balsamic cream.

In the house photos the raviolis show up cooked twice — in white sauce and browned on a square plate — and once raw, dusted with flour on the work table.

The desserts

Four, and three of the four are tiramisù: the tradizionale, the alla Fragola, with strawberry, and the Mandorle e cioccolato, with almond and chocolate. The fourth is the Trilogia di Cioccolato. A menu that gives three quarters of its dessert section to the same sweet is telling you something: tiramisù is the speciality, and in the photos it comes dusted with cocoa in a deep dish, on the checked tablecloth.

How eating works here

Buffet and table service, in the same room

The house declares both: buffet service and table service with waiters. Having the two together changes how an evening gets planned, because they're very different ways of having dinner and here you don't have to choose between two restaurants in advance: the buffet handles the table that wants to serve itself and head back early, table service handles the dinner that wants to last.

It's an uncommon pairing for a trattoria, and it's the fact that organises the visit most. On a trip, the night you arrive worn out from the beach and the night you go out to dinner properly are two different nights, and both fit at the same address.

Vegan and vegetarian, both declared

The place declares vegan options and vegetarian options, listed separately. That distinction matters: a vegan line declared on its own means it's planned for in the kitchen rather than solved by leaving the cheese off a plate. For a mixed table, which is nearly always the table on a group trip, that's what lets you pick a restaurant without negotiating first.

Dinner and dessert

The house declares dinner service and a dessert section, and it also declares late-night food. That last attribute defines how the place gets used as much as the cooking does: this is a room you can reach late, when the evening has run behind, and still sit down to eat.

And for the night you'd rather not go out, they do delivery: the same kitchen reaches the flat or the guesthouse.

To drink

The bar is on site and the list covers the full range: wine, cocktails, beer, spirits and coffee. In a trattoria wine is the expected partner, and having it alongside cocktails opens the other door: sitting down early at the outside tables, ordering a drink, and staying until you're hungry.

Coffee on the same list ends dinner where it began, with no need to move the table somewhere else for the last part.

The room

The place describes itself with four words: cosy, casual, romantic and quiet. That's the classic register of a trattoria, and it matches what the rest of the listing declares: waiters at the table, dinner service and a wine list to go with it.

The outdoor tables are the other feature that shapes the evening. In Pipa, eating outside isn't a design detail: it's the difference between a comfortable summer dinner and a shut-in one, and here they're declared as part of the service. There's free wifi too, which for a long dessert or a table planning the next day solves more than it sounds like.

One thing the house puts on its own listing: it identifies as a women-owned business.

Where it is and how to get there

The address is Avenida Baía dos Golfinhos 1102, in Tibau do Sul, postcode 59178-000. This is Pipa's main avenue, the one that holds the village's shops and runs down to Praia da Pipa: from any guesthouse in the centre it's a walk, and after dinner the way back is the same walk.

If you're driving, the parking is declared wheelchair accessible. And if you're arriving from Natal or the airport, look at the transfer options for the long leg.

In a wheelchair, and with a hearing aid

This is where Mamma Mia separates itself from the rest of the avenue. It declares an accessible entrance, seating, bathroom and parking — all four, at the same address — and on top of that a hearing loop.

The hearing loop is the rare one and the one worth underlining: it sends sound straight to a hearing aid, without the noise of the room in between. For someone with hearing loss, dinner out stops being an exercise in concentration and goes back to being a conversation. It is an uncommon accessibility feature in a beach dining room, and here it is declared on the house's own listing.

Who it's for

For the table that wants Italian cooking in the centre, with the evening solved on foot and no transport to arrange: a trattoria, tables outside, wine and table service.

For a mixed table with someone vegan or vegetarian, because both lines are declared separately and there's nothing to ask at the door.

And for anyone travelling in a wheelchair or using a hearing aid: it declares all four wheelchair features and adds the hearing loop on its listing.
