What to eat

From the sea

This is the heart of the menu and its longest section. The Chapa do Mar brings prawns, squid rings and fish together on a single hotplate to share, and beside it sit fish fillet in herb oil, fish steak — plain or in prawn sauce — and fish fillet with prawns. Prawns get several readings of their own: in herb oil, in garlic and oil, and as a fillet.

Whole fish has a section to itself, in three preparations: fried, "tropical", and fried with grilled pineapple. The fish is chosen by type and size, and that is settled at the table.

Then there are the two moquecas — fish and mixed, both with vegetables and pirão, served with rice and banana farofa — and the caldinhos, the regional corner of the whole menu: fish broth and stews of sururu mussels, prawns and oysters. And one rarity for the village: griddled octopus tentacles with sautéed peppers, rustic potatoes and parsley rice, which the house lists as its special.

Hotplates and petiscos to share

The chapa — the hotplate — is the format of the house. In the petisco version there is carne de sol with onions and fried cassava, carne de sol with grilled queijo coalho, strips of filet mignon with chips, and fish fillet in herb oil.

A second line of hotplates is built as a main course: carne de sol in cream, carne de sol with queijo coalho, and griddled chicken fillet, each with three sides of your choosing from rice, mixed salad, banana farofa, cassava fried or boiled, chips and beans. The sides also exist on their own, along with fish pirão, prawn pirão and vinaigrette, so a long table orders two mains and four sides and everyone eats.

To start, the classic petiscos: breaded prawns, fish and chicken strips, peeled prawns, breaded squid, a breaded seafood mix and frango à passarinho. The pastéis are listed separately, filled with prawn, carne de sol, cheese, chicken or pizza.

Risottos, pasta and individual plates

The risotto section is long for a beach bar: Risoto Legado with beef fillet, carne de sol risotto with queijo coalho and cane molasses, fillet risotto with gorgonzola, prawn risotto, and an arroz piamontese that arrives with pork ribs and barbecue sauce. Two of the risottos are listed as vegetarian: cheese with cashews, and a seven-grain rice with gratinated potatoes.

For pasta, three spaghettis: in prawn sauce, in pesto with beef fillet, and carbonara. And two individual plates with names of their own — Camarão do Sertão, sautéed prawns with vegetables, pumpkin purée and queijo coalho, and Du Mar, fish fillet with vegetables and parsley rice.

Açaí, salads and the lighter half

Because it opens at nine in the morning, the menu keeps a whole lighter half that works early and again after the beach. Açaí comes small, large or with a fruit salad, always with banana, honey and granola. The salads have names: Frangosa, chicken in lemon dressing; Maresia, with sautéed prawns; and one with grilled tuna fillet, pesto and grilled pineapple.

For dessert, milk pudding with slivers of guava, and a chocolate brownie with ice cream. Plus coffee, house-style or espresso.

With children

There is a kids' menu of their own: breaded fish or chicken strips with chips, rice and salad. It is the detail that makes a family table simple to settle.

What to drink

The bar lists six house cocktails: Especial Hey Ho (a frozen aged-cachaça drink with caramelised ginger and lime), Absolut Hey Ho (vodka with passion fruit, pineapple and ginger), Da Praia (frozen vodka with strawberry, orange and mint), Verano (rum with macerated strawberry, lime and mint), Maré Hey Ho (gin with red fruits and caramelised ginger) and Hey Ho Blue, gin with curaçao, pineapple and lime.

The classics are all there: caipirinha, caipirinha with aged cachaça, caipiroska, caipifruta with fruit in season, caipi gin, gin and tonic with either Brazilian or imported gin, piña colada, mojito, Coco-Loko with coconut water and coconut milk, and the Ula Ula of strawberry and pineapple, which also comes alcohol-free.

Every wine they pour is imported, in their own words: there is white, rosé and sparkling. Beers come in 600 ml bottles and long necks.

And then the juices, which explain the opening hour. Six house blends — Praieira, Bomba Beach, Verdão, Energia, Fresh and Verão, mixing açaí, kale, beetroot, acerola, ginger and fruit — plus fresh juices of pineapple, mango, passion fruit, lime, guava, orange, cajá, cashew fruit, kiwi and açaí, by the glass or by the jug. Coconut water too, also by the jug.

The room

The house describes itself as casual and quiet, which fits the hours it keeps: a bar that closes at five is not a bar with the music up. Service is at the table, with waiters, the stated format is eating in, and there is a toilet.

The bar runs its own digital menu with online ordering, and the same system lets you send the order over WhatsApp before you arrive. There is Wi-Fi, declared by the bar itself: for a place where people stay for hours after the beach, that is more useful than it sounds.

When to go

The hours are the fact to be clear about: it opens at 9am and closes at 5pm, every day. Eight hours, always the same ones, with no weekly day off.

This is a daytime bar from end to end. At nine in the morning the half of the menu that works is the lighter one — coffee, juices, açaí — and from midday the kitchen takes over with hotplates, fish, risottos and moqueca. At five it closes, and on Praia do Amor that makes sense: this beach is lived with the sun and the tide, and Pipa's nightlife doesn't pass through here. If you're building a beach day, this is the lunch and the long sit afterwards; if you're building dinner, that's a different plan.

Where it is and how to get there

It sits at 50 Rua Praia do Amor, the street named after the beach: to reach Praia do Amor you go along this street, and the bar is on it.

One piece of advice that genuinely matters on this beach: check the tide before you head down. Praia do Amor is a different beach depending on the height of the water. The bar is up at street level: check the tide table first, decide after.

If you drive down, the house states a paid open parking area.

If you're arriving in Pipa from Natal or the airport, see the transfer options.

Who is it for?

For the table that wants seafood on a beach day: the sea section is the longest part of the menu, whole fish is chosen by the piece, and the hotplates are for sharing.

For the family that needs everyone to eat their own thing: there's a kids' menu, hotplates with three sides to choose, and two vegetarian risottos.

And for anyone heading down to Praia do Amor early who wants somewhere already open at nine in the morning, with coffee, juice and açaí before the kitchen gets going.
