Creperia Marinas

Creperie on the banks of the Lagoon, with an indescribable view of the sunset

There is an old wooden pier reaching out into the Lagoa de Guaraíras, in Tibau do Sul, directly opposite the Hotel Marinas. Creperia Marinas works off those boards: tables out over the water, live music, and a menu of sweet and savoury crepes coming out while the sun drops behind the far side of the lagoon. It opens every day at 1pm, and the whole afternoon is built around that light.

What to eat

The menu says it from the start: two long lists of crepes, one savoury and one sweet, with small plates, main-course salads, broths and ice cream around them. Service is at the table and the kitchen runs straight through from opening.

Savoury crepes

Prawns run this half of the menu and turn up seven ways: in curry sauce, "especial", with catupiry cheese, as stroganoff, "especial" with catupiry, in the Oriente — coconut prawns with queijo coalho, pineapple, basil and curry — and in the Camarão terê, torched and finished with teriyaki. The one named after the hour is the Pôr do Sol, a house recipe: prawns, bacon, queijo coalho, catupiry, toasted grated coconut, basil and a balsamic reduction.

The other half comes from inland, with northeastern names: the Pé de serra, with carne de sol and catupiry; the Sertanejo, with shredded salt-cured charque and queijo coalho; the Nordestina, which adds banana to the carne de sol. Beside them sit the classics — ham and cheese, cordon bleu, carbonara, Italian, four cheeses, margherita, bolognese, tuna — and the whole chicken range. For a table without meat there are three solid exits: the Malembá, named after the ferry crossing over the lagoon, with buffalo mozzarella, rocket and sun-dried tomatoes; the Danana, spinach and gorgonzola; and the Vegano, built on the kitchen's own vegan batter with vegetables, chickpeas and crushed cashew.

Sweet crepes

The sweet list is longer still and splits into two worlds. On one side the patisserie repertoire: hazelnut cream with cashew, dark chocolate, dulce de leche, caramelised apple and Frutas com sorvete, with flambéed pineapple, banana and mango. On the other, the regional side, where the menu turns local: the Zona da mata is queijo coalho with cane-mill honey; the Cartola, the Pernambuco dessert, comes with cheese, banana, sugar and cinnamon; Romeu e Julieta pairs guava cream with queijo coalho; Da terra carries plantain cream in coconut milk with salted caramel; and the Prainha adds banana, chocolate, raisins and rum.

Small plates, salads and broths

To open there are prawn and coalho cheese skewers finished with cane-mill honey, garlic prawns or prawns sautéed in butter with onion, octopus vinaigrette, burrata with pesto and brie with chilli jam. Broths come in prawn, fish and sururu, the mussel from the region's mangroves. Salads are main courses, built on mixed leaves with chopped cashew and shaved parmesan, ordered with tuna, chicken, prawns or salmon; the vegan one is built on chickpeas. For ice cream there is the mini sundae and açaí with banana and granola.

To drink

The bar is a long one for a creperie. The house cocktails open with the Guaraíras, named after the lagoon: vodka with blackberry, raspberry, strawberry and lemongrass. Next to it is the Pôr do Sol, with vodka, tangerine, cointreau, ginger and basil. Then the long list: caipirinha, caipifruta, mojito, aperol spritz, limoncello spritz, spiced gin and tonic, moscow mule, negroni, clericot and margarita.

For the table that is not drinking there are three alcohol-free spritzes, fresh fruit juices by the glass or the jug, iced hibiscus tea, green coconut served in its own shell and espresso. The wine list is their own: sparkling brut, rosé, demi-sec and moscatel, Argentine malbec, Chilean pinot and cabernet, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and Portuguese bottles, with wine by the glass and port by the small glass. There are long-neck beers, and alcohol-free versions of both beer and sparkling wine.

The setting

The place occupies an old pier running out over the lagoon, with a wooden railing as the only edge between the table and the water. That is the whole of the architecture, and it is enough: what you hear is the water and the band.

Because there is live music here, and it is part of the plan. The house lists it among its services, and it is what separates a long sit-down from a quick stop: you arrive at five, order something to share, and stay. The place describes itself as somewhere for fun and for friends, as well as for couples and families: all four fit, because the pier is long.

Sunset is the other reason the house states itself. The lagoon opens to the west and the sun sets on the far side of the water, so you watch it head-on from the table, without climbing to any viewpoint. There is Wi-Fi, cards are accepted, and the business identifies itself as LGBTQ+ friendly.

When to go

It opens seven days a week, always at 1pm. Sunday to Thursday the kitchen runs until 8pm; Friday and Saturday it stretches to 9pm. There is no closing day in the week, which in an area where plenty of kitchens rest one day is the difference between planning ahead and simply going.

Late afternoon is the hour that matters. If the sunset over the water is what you came for, arrive with time to spare: the table against the railing is the one that looks straight out, and it is the first to fill. Getting there at four or half past four leaves room to order, eat something savoury and still be sitting with the sweet crepe when the light turns.

If you prefer the pier quiet, the first stretch — one to three — is the lunch slot, with the sun high and fewer tables taken. For the evening, Friday and Saturday are the long days: that extra hour falls entirely after sundown.

Where it is and how to get there

The address is Gov. Aluízio Alves 334, in Tibau do Sul: the avenue that runs along the high edge of the village, facing the lagoon. The landmark is the Hotel Marinas, directly opposite, and from there you go down to the pier. The exact point is plus code RW85+HG.

Tibau do Sul sits north of Praia da Pipa, on the same road. From Pipa Beach it is a few minutes by car, and the route passes Madeiro Beach, so the afternoon can run in two parts: beach first, pier afterwards. If you are coming from Natal or the airport, look at the transfer options first, and if this is your first trip to the area, the guide on how to get to Pipa covers the long leg.

Who it's for

For the couple who want to watch the sunset sitting down: the table faces the water head-on, the house takes bookings, and the music starts as the light drops.

For a table of friends out to stretch the afternoon, with small plates to share, house cocktails and a wine list.

And for the mixed table: with almost forty savoury crepes, thirty sweet ones, six main-course salads and a house vegan batter, nobody has to negotiate what they eat.
