Armazem Italia

From Italy, direct to Pipa the best pasta in the region!

At number 1502 on Av. Baía dos Golfinhos, Pipa's Italian kitchen opens at eleven in the morning and does not close until eleven at night. Armazem Italia makes its potato-and-flour gnocchi in house, and serves it the way it serves everything else: you choose the pasta first, then you choose the sauce. The menu spells it out — "our pastas and sauces are totally homemade" — and it is printed in Portuguese and English.

What to eat

First the pasta

The menu opens with five pastas and you have to pick one: spaghetti, fettuccine or penne; potato-and-flour gnocchi; spinach and ricotta ravioli; mushroom and cheese ravioli; and Parma ham and cheese ravioli. It is the first step of a two-step system, and the one that sets the texture of the plate.

Then the sauce

There are ten, and any of them goes with any of the pastas. The tomato side holds pomodoro with basil, puttanesca with olives and capers, amatriciana with bacon and bolognese with ground beef; the creamy side holds carbonara with egg, bacon, parmesan and black pepper, four cheeses, and one of butter, rosemary and truffle. Basil pesto comes on its own or with ground beef, in the version the house calls Mamma Mia. Seafood closes the list.

The system settles a table with different tastes: the same gnocchi arrives with bolognese for one person and four cheeses for another, and nobody has to negotiate.

Starters

Grilled vegetables, chicken salad, Mediterranean salad with olives and parmesan, french fries, onion rings and breaded shrimp. They open the long table and come out to share.

Single plates

For anyone skipping pasta: eggplant parmigiana with spaghetti, beef lasagna and an executive plate that brings rice or spaghetti, beans, salad and beef or chicken. Above those sit chicken parmigiana, filet mignon with gorgonzola and beef sirloin tagliata with rocket and parmesan, each served with two side dishes chosen from spaghetti, rice, vegetables, beans or fries.

Desserts

The house tiramisù comes in three versions, all built on the same homemade biscuit: the traditional one soaked in coffee and rum aroma with cream cheese and cocoa powder; the alla fragola soaked in limoncello with strawberry coulis; and the mandorle e cioccolato with chocolate and almond cream. The fourth dessert is salame di cioccolato, a cocoa dough rolled with homemade biscuits, frozen and served with vanilla ice cream and homemade strawberry jam.

What to drink

There is a bar on site, and the drinks list keeps up with it. During the day, fresh lime, pineapple or passion-fruit juice, soft drinks, still and sparkling water, lime water and Schweppes tonic or citrus. Espresso is both on the menu and among the house attributes.

There are four beers: Heineken long neck, Petra in a can, Eisenbahn long neck and alcohol-free Estrella Galicia. On the cocktail side, caipirinha, fruit caipirinha, caipiroska, caipifruta, strawberry frozen and Aperol Spritz. And to finish the meal, limoncello, limoncello cream and a basil-and-rosemary amaro, which is the Italian full stop.

Wine comes by the glass, red or white, and by the bottle, with a list of its own covering Italian, Argentine, Chilean and Portuguese reds and whites, a rosé and a sparkling and champagne section.

The room

The house calls itself cosy, casual, lively and relaxed, and the dining room answers to that: tables dressed in burgundy cloth, dark wooden chairs, framed pictures on the walls and an arch at the back, with daylight coming in from the side. This is a tablecloth room, not a board-and-paper one.

The entrance is a passage with the "ARMAZEM ITALIA" sign above the door, the logo doormat, plants and a table set with lemons: that is your landmark from the avenue. There are outdoor tables as well for anyone who prefers to eat in the open.

Inside there is a bathroom, a bar and free wi-fi. The house is listed as a place that welcomes the LGBTQ+ community.

When to go

Armazem Italia opens six days a week on a long clock: Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 11pm, and Wednesday half an hour shorter, to 10.30pm. Twelve hours of unbroken service means you never have to fight the clock: lunch at noon, a plate at four when mid-afternoon kitchens in Pipa run thin, dinner at nine.

Tuesdays it is closed. That is the fact worth writing down: if your pasta plan lands on a Tuesday, move it to any other day of the week.

For lunch, the comfortable window runs from noon to 1.30pm. Mid-afternoon, between 3pm and 6pm, the room is loose and the kitchen keeps going: that is the stretch that makes an unbroken timetable genuinely useful. For dinner, sitting down between 7.30pm and 9pm keeps you ahead of the peak.

Coming as a group is worth a booking: the house takes them, and a room of dressed tables is arranged in advance rather than on the fly.

Where it is and how to get there

The restaurant sits at Av. Baía dos Golfinhos 1502, the street that crosses central Pipa end to end. From the path down to Praia da Pipa it is a short walk, and the whole village is covered on foot.

If you drive, there is free street parking, with the caveat that in high season a space on the avenue is hard to find: leave the car a couple of blocks back and finish on foot. Wheelchair-accessible parking is declared. Arriving from Natal, look at the transfer options.

And if the plan is to eat at the flat, the house does takeaway, delivery and contactless delivery.

With children and in a wheelchair

The house is listed as good for kids and has high chairs, which is the attribute that settles a table with babies. The menu helps: spaghetti with pomodoro, gnocchi with four cheeses and a plate of fries work on their own, and small plates let you order gradually.

On accessibility this listing is unusually complete: wheelchair-accessible entrance, seating, bathroom and parking are all four declared. You do not have to choose between getting in and being able to use the bathroom.

Who it suits

The table that wants pasta without having to agree on it: everyone picks their own shape and their own sauce, and each plate arrives as it was ordered.

Anyone who turns up hungry mid-afternoon, when half of Pipa has shut the lunch kitchen and dinner is still hours away: service here runs from 11am to 11pm without a break.

Families with children: high chairs, straightforward plates and a room with waiter service.

And anyone travelling in a wheelchair: this is one of the few places in the village with all four accessibility attributes declared.
