Boobalai

Since 2007 being part of the history of Praia da Pipa. Food, drink, friends, art and good sound!

Galeria Pipa Mar opens off Avenida Baía dos Golfinhos: a stone passage with steps at the far end, plants hanging overhead and wooden tables set against the wall. Right at the entrance is Boobalai's wooden sign, with the counter and tall stools facing the walkway. You eat sitting down, with waiters, and what comes out of the kitchen is big sandwiches on crusty bread, burgers and knife-and-fork plates. It opens for lunch Tuesday to Sunday and runs until half past eleven at night.

How eating here works

This is table service: you walk in, you are seated, there are waiters and the food arrives plated. The house lists lunch, dinner and dessert, and also small plates, which is the key word for this kitchen: you can come in for something light at the counter without ordering a main.

The photographs line up with that: large sandwiches on crusty bread, cut in half and served in a basket with fries; burgers with a thick patty and melted cheese on a sesame bun, set on a wooden board; and, on the plated side, picanha on a hot plate that arrives sizzling with potatoes, breaded steak parmigiana with a side and salad, and grilled fish with purée and green leaves. There is also a shrimp salad, the light midday option, and cheese-topped fries to share at the counter.

That gives the place two uses. At lunch, straight down from the beach, it works as a stop for a sandwich and fries with sand still on your feet. At night, with the gallery lit, it turns into a table for snacks and a drink before or after dinner.

The house also lists late-night food, and with the kitchen open until 11.30pm that holds: it is one of the few places in the centre where you can order something hot when the afternoon has run long.

Takeaway and ordering ahead

Alongside table service, the house does takeaway and accepts pre-orders. Those two details change how the place actually gets used: you can message them on WhatsApp before leaving the beach and pick the sandwich up without waiting for a table, or settle dinner at the apartment without going out to look for something else. In a pedestrian gallery in the centre, where parking is not the problem but a table in high season is, ordering ahead is the difference between eating at nine and eating at ten.

To drink

There is a bar on site and the drinks list is stated in full: cocktails, beer, wine, spirits and coffee. There is also happy hour, with drinks and dishes built for that slot, which in a pedestrian gallery lands exactly when people are walking back from the sea.

The counter is part of the idea: tall stools against the bar, lit bottles behind and a direct view down the passage. It is the spot for a beer and a small plate without taking a table.

The room

The house describes itself as casual, quiet, contemporary, trendy and suited to special occasions. In practice it is a small, well-arranged spot inside a pedestrian gallery rather than a closed dining room.

What the photographs show: the wooden sign hung above the counter, woven fibre lampshades, plants dropping from the ceiling and a wall of charcoal portraits. The wooden tables run in a line against the stone wall of the passage, so you eat looking out at the gallery. At night the sign lights up and the place becomes the brightest point in the walkway.

There is Wi-Fi and a toilet, and the audience the house lists is groups and tourists: a table of four or five fits without a squeeze.

When to go

Tuesday to Sunday it opens at 11.30am and closes at 11.30pm; on Mondays it opens only at 6.30pm. There is no closing day: the kitchen works all seven, but Monday has no lunch service. That is the single most useful fact on this page, because in Pipa a Monday can easily turn into a lottery.

Twelve straight hours from Tuesday to Sunday means you do not have to watch the clock: you can have a late lunch at three or an early dinner at six and there is always service. On a rainy day, when the beach is off the table, a covered gallery with an all-day kitchen solves lunch.

And for the end of the day there is happy hour, which the house lists: the hour when the gallery fills with people coming back from the sea and the counter becomes the natural place to wait for a table.

Where it is and how to get there

It sits inside Galeria Pipa Mar, on Avenida Baía dos Golfinhos 764, in the middle of the village. You walk in straight from the pavement: the stone passage is public and Boobalai is almost at its mouth, so there is nothing to hunt for.

From Baía dos Golfinhos you walk up the same avenue and arrive in a few minutes, which makes it a natural stop on the way back from the beach. If you are coming from Natal, from the airport or from another beach along the coast, look at the transfer options to cover the stretch into the village and then get around on foot.

With children

The house states that it is good for children. It does not report high chairs or a kids' menu, but sandwiches, fries and burgers settle a family table without any negotiation, and the pedestrian passage removes the problem of a pavement on a busy avenue.

Who it suits

A table coming down from the beach mid-afternoon that wants a big sandwich and fries without committing to a formal lunch.

A group of friends after a counter, small plates and happy hour in the centre, a few steps from everything.

And the night you eat late: there is a hot kitchen until half past eleven, seven days a week.
