Taipa Brasil

Bar, Restaurant, Art & Culture

Avenida Baía dos Golfinhos is the street all of Pipa comes and goes along, and at number 1362 Taipa Brasil opens at eleven in the morning and does not close until three the next morning. That is sixteen straight hours with the door open, seven days a week: the midday table, the afternoon, dinner and the small hours all pass through the same dining room. The house presents itself as a bar, a restaurant, and a space for art and culture.

What to eat

The menu has four blocks - parmegianas, plates, pizzas and petiscos - plus one dessert, and the first thing that jumps out is how they are named: nearly all the names come out of reggae.

Parmegianas

This is the block the house puts up front. The base is always the same - Italian dough, mozzarella, house tomato sauce and chips - and you pick the filling from four: aubergine, chicken, beef and prawn. The house shoots it from overhead: it lands on the wooden table with the chips beside it and a lemonade.

Plates

Eight, with plenty of range. The Vegano is a wok of vegetables and shiitake with sesame. The Argentino comes with beef or chicken, breaded or grilled, and the Surfista is the fish version. The fettuccine comes with a choice of four sauces, among them a pesto with prawn and sun-dried tomato. The Taipa Brasil is the house plate: prawns stuffed with catupiry, creamy four-cheese rice, leek with bacon chips and caramelised onion. The Hawaiano brings crisp prawns with sauteed vegetables and cream cheese. The salad - with chicken, prawn or grilled queijo coalho - and the sandwich close the block.

Pizzas

Nineteen of them, in two sizes, four slices and eight, and each one carries the name of a reggae artist or band. There are the international ones - Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Alpha Blondy, Alborosie, Sizzla, Dezarie, Eek-A-Mouse, Jesse Royal - and beside them the whole Brazilian scene: Mato Seco, Edson Gomes, Tribo de Jah, Ponto de Equilíbrio, Planta e Raiz, Adão Negro, Cedric Myltton, Hélio Bentes, Vibrações and Natural Mystic. The sweet one is called Groundation and comes with chocolate and red berries.

The one they photograph whole comes with prawns and olives, covering the table. It is worth asking what goes on each name when you order: the menu lists them by artist, not by ingredient.

Petiscos and the dessert

Ten, and here too the names are part of the place. Potatoes show up in four versions - Chapadão, chips with cocktail sauce; Batata Roots, rustic; Boomboclat, four cheeses with bacon; and Monte Sião, with crisp prawns. Then come Dreadlock, breaded chicken strips; De Boa, crisp fish; Acende, with carne de sol and queijo coalho; Chama na Tapioca, tapioca cubes; Pegue a Visão, the charcuterie board; and Argentine empanadas.

There is one dessert, Flamboia: a chocolate brownie with cream ice cream and hot red-berry sauce. The menu also asks for something worth knowing: if you have any allergy or intolerance, tell the waiter.

To drink

The house describes itself as a bar before it describes itself as a restaurant, and the menu backs that up. The fresh juices are the longest list - blackberry, passion fruit, pineapple, lime, strawberry, mango, cashew and a red-berry one - with water, sparkling water, soft drinks and energy drinks alongside.

There are twelve cocktails: the caipirinha with its family - caipiroska and caipifruta - gin and tonic, gin or vodka with an energy drink, mojito, margarita, fruit daiquiri, cuba libre, fernet with coke and the xequemate, the cachaça one.

Beer comes in cans, in long necks and in 600 ml bottles, the size for sharing; in the photos it appears exactly like that, next to a clay bowl of rustic potatoes. There is wine by the glass and by the bottle, plus spirits and whiskies.

The room

You eat on an open-air deck, with solid wood tables and benches, plants around it and bunting strung overhead. The house name is painted on the back wall, and it is the first thing you see walking in. There is an indoor room too, which is what lets the sixteen-hour day run the same way whatever the weather.

The house introduces itself in three words: bar, restaurant, art and culture. That mix is what organises the place: at midday it works as an avenue restaurant and, as the night goes on, it slides towards the bar side, without changing address or door. The names on the menu run along the same line.

1362 is on the avenue but half a kilometre along from the cluster of shops: a few minutes on foot from the centre and, at the same time, not in the busiest spot. On iFood the house publishes itself under the pizza category, and that is where delivery comes from.

When to go

Taipa Brasil keeps the widest hours in the whole survey of Pipa's food places: it opens every day and closes at three in the morning. There is no closing day. On six of the seven days it opens at eleven in the morning; Tuesday is the one day that starts later, at six in the evening.

That leaves three stretches to choose from. Midday, 11am to 3pm, is for anyone eating before heading down to the beach or right after coming up. The afternoon is the dead stretch across most of the village and here it is open. And the long night, which is where the difference lies: at the hour the rest of the centre starts closing, there are still hours of service here.

If you turn up on a Tuesday before six in the evening, it is shut. That is the scheduling detail worth keeping in mind before walking down to 1362.

Where it is and how to get there

Taipa Brasil is on Avenida Baía dos Golfinhos at number 1362, half a kilometre from the centre of Praia da Pipa: you walk the avenue and the numbering does the rest, about seven or eight minutes on foot.

From Praia da Pipa you come up to the avenue and walk; from central Pipa it is a short straight stretch. If the plan is to head back in the small hours, the house closes at three: by then it helps to have worked out how you are getting back.

Who it suits

Anyone eating off the clock. This is the profile the house solves best: whoever got back late from a tour, whoever only got free at four in the afternoon, or whoever is hungry at one in the morning will find the room running.

Anyone staying out late. With a three in the morning close, the night ends when you decide it does.

Anyone staying on the avenue. Half a kilometre from the centre and on the main street, you can reach it on foot from a good share of the village's places to stay.

Frequently asked questions

How late is Taipa Brasil open?

Until 3am, all seven days of the week, Monday included. It is the latest closing time recorded among Pipa's food places.

What time does it open, and can you have lunch?

At 11am on six of the seven days, so the midday sitting is covered. Tuesday is the exception: that day service starts at 6pm and there is no lunch.

What do you eat at Taipa Brasil?

Parmegianas in four fillings, eight plates, nineteen pizzas in two sizes, ten petiscos and one dessert. On iFood the house publishes itself under the pizza category, and that is where delivery comes from.

Why do the pizzas have odd names?

Because each one carries the name of a reggae artist or band, from Bob Marley and Peter Tosh to Tribo de Jah and Ponto de Equilíbrio. The petiscos follow the same idea. Since the menu lists them by name rather than by ingredient, it is worth asking what goes on each one when you order.

Are there vegetarian or vegan options?

Yes. Among the plates there is the Vegano, a wok of vegetables and shiitake with sesame; the aubergine parmegiana; the salad, which can be ordered with grilled queijo coalho; and the tapioca among the petiscos.

Where exactly is it?

At Avenida Baía dos Golfinhos 1362, Tibau do Sul (RN), postcode 59178-000, some 0.5 km from the centre of Praia da Pipa.

Do you eat inside or outside?

Both. There is an open-air deck with wooden tables and benches, plants and bunting, and there is an indoor room, which is what lets the sixteen-hour day run the same way whatever the weather.
